Seeds in the City
Seeds in the City tells the remarkable story of how the people of Havana have
pulled themselves back from the brink of disaster. Faced with food shortages
and widespread hunger, city dwellers began growing food on rooftops, in schoolyards,
and in front of office buildings. Now there are thousands of urban farms in
a city better known for its music, dance and nightlife.
Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are tightly restricted. Yet more than a million tons of food is produced within the city limits, about half of Havana's nutritional requirements. It is part of what some have called the biggest conversion to organic farming ever attempted.
This green revolution has changed communist Cuba in other ways, leading to the legalization of food markets and small businesses.
Seeds in the City captures the rhythms and beauty of one of the hemisphere's most captivating cities and shows viewers a side of Havana rarely seen by outsiders. It also touches on the growing contribution of urban agriculture to global food security with examples ranging from North America to Africa.
Searching for Balance is based on the documentary of the same title and contains
extensive video excerpts of this production.
