| Global Heroes Online has
been designed to meet the needs of teachers looking for reliable on-line
information that their students can use to explore global issues from
a Canadian perspective. What sets the site apart are the many in-depth
profiles of ordinary Canadians who are making a difference in the
world.
Teachers and students
in classrooms across the country have tested the site and their
suggestions have been incorporated.
Global Heroes Online
is also accessible from SchoolNet. http://www.schoolnet.ca/home/e/resources/socstud/global.html
The french-language version
of Global Heroes can be found at Heros du monde http://www.herosdumonde.com.
Global
Heroes On-line has the following major components:
Passionate
Connection (requires Shockwave)
Through profiles of Canadians
on the frontlines of human rights struggles, Passionate Connection
offers secondary students the opportunity to explore the meaning
of human rights both at home and throughout the world. Specific
information on how to use Passionate Connection in the classroom
may be found here (http://www.globalheroes.com/passionate/titles/tablecontents.htm).
Trailblazers:
Profiles of unsung Canadian
heroes have been grouped into elementary and secondary levels to
correspond to their subject matter as well as overall level of complexity.
In the It's Your Planet section, students will learn more about
how global issues affect them in Canada, and find volunteer information
and tips on how different careers can have international dimensions.
In the Staff Room,
there are lesson plans associated with each trail blazer, a library
page offering annotated resource listings for teachers, and the
feedback page where teachers and librarians can send us their comments,
questions and suggestions.
Links
to the World:
An annotated list of dozens
of sites useful to students. In addition, the Global Heroes home
page has links to our favorite news sites, and Canadian sites of
particular interest.
