What is a construction manager?

A construction manager is responsible for checking, implementing, and executing a design for a structure or system, and overseeing the organization needed to do so.

Description

A construction manager's work involves:

  • coordinating and managing people, materials, equipment, budgets, schedules, contracts, and workplace safety
  • acting as the representative of the owner or developer of the project, often the government


The work can encompass any or all of the following responsibilities:

  • following architect's specifications, surveys, and building codes
  • obtaining necessary permits
  • determining labour requirements
  • organizing subcontractors
  • costing and scheduling
  • overseeing the work of supervisors, field engineers, and working crews
  • monitoring delivery and use of materials and equipment
  • monitoring quality control, worker productivity, and safety
  • working with local government, educational institutions, engineers, architectural specifications, surveys

Education/Training

  • High school courses in mathematics, environmental studies, technology, and/or industrial arts
  • Two years of community college education in construction management or construction technology
