LITERACY WORKER

What is a LITERACY WORKER

A literacy worker works with and encourages others to develop reading, writing, math, and communication skills.

Description

Literacy workers are closely involved with education. Beyond teaching classes, a literacy worker might:

  • train volunteer tutors
  • work one-on-one with students with special needs
  • develop learning plans and materials
  • manage the literacy organization
  • secure funding for the organization

Education/ Training

Since there is no formal certification, people come to literacy from a number of different backgrounds:
  • writing
  • community development
  • education
  • social work
  • a Bachelor of Education (not required, but useful)

Skills
  • strong communication skills
  • patient
  • sensitive to how people learn
  • comfortable working in a multicultural environment
  • able to develop trust
  • able to encourage and instill confidence in others

Think about:

What can a literacy worker do in Peru or any other country or community with a low literacy rate?

International Connections

For all careers there are international opportunities that people can pursue. Some careers offer short-term international connections of a few months or years; others present possibilities to span an entire career.
  • Train people within the community to be literacy workers.
  • Coordinate the start-up of a literacy program: work with local government, educators and community to gain support by illustrating needs and benefits; to develop suitable materials; and to procure funding and donations for learning materials and space.
