Claude Tremblay
Claude Tremblay was the Canadian director of the Arenal Project
until the completion of Canada's role in 2000.
He
has lived in Central America for 20 years and has put down roots
here. He married a Nicaraguan woman - Patricia and has had four
children.
Claude has spent most of his Adult life outside Canada. Born
to a family that trapped in rural Quebec, Claude has worked in
Africa and Latin America - most recently in Nicaragua just after
that country's revolution.
This cross cultural experience is key to his role at the Arenal
project. He understands the project, and the implications it has
on rural people. Back in Canada, he also has to know how to explain
the success of the project to Canadians in a way that Canadians
understand.
In Central America, Claude's role has ended. His job was always
to ensure the project could work without him. While it included
the transfer of equipment and financial resources the project's
strength lay in the Costa Ricans who will continue to manage the
project. And as the project is ending - there is a solid core
of people equipped to do the job.
