A Modern Country
Costa Rica is a modern country. It doesn't fit into the standard
notion of what a developing country might look like.
Sometimes
called the Switzerland of Central America, it has one of the highest
standards of living, the largest middle class, the best public
health care and education system and the highest literacy rate
in Latin America.
Most Costa Ricans, especially the 3.6 million people who live
in the capital of San Jose are in touch with North American and
European trends.
But it also places a demands on the land as farmers and campesinos
are expected to provide the products they need.
