Searching for Balance
Costa Rica has embarked on a major experiment. It is working to
balance economic development with the preservation of its biodiversity
- one of the richest in the world.
The strategy does not create a giant fence with the words Keep
Out. Instead, it is integrating the interests of surrounding
communities and linking their economic future to the future of
protected areas.
This web site is based on the television production produced
for Vision-TV and outlines
the work of Canadians and Costa Ricans working to finding a balance
between the differing demands for the land where wildlife and
humans can coexist.
While the Searching for Balance website is not meant
to be an exhaustive discussion of the issue, it provides an overview
of biodiversity in Costa Rica, specific examples of wildlife and
landscape protection, ecotourism and Canadian assistance in the
Arenal region of Costa Rica. .
