Farmers
in the City
Most people expected a typical urban life
Havana is now home to almost a third of the country’s population.
But none of the big-city attractions were much use when food became
scarce.
Many families have lived here for centuries and knew little, if
anything about growing food. They expected to go to university and
learn a profession and trade, and to buy food in the ration shops
and stores.
They never imagined they would have to be farmers.
The food crisis changed all that.
