A former soldierJose Jiménez
A second career

Jose Jiménez is a retired soldier.

He has a small home in the suburbs of Havana and likes to show off a photograph depicting him with a young Fidel Castro.

Now he has an unexpected, second career.

Each day he bicycles to a plot of land on the outskirts of Havana. Like thousands of others, he received it from the State, in exchange for a promise that he use it to grow food.

He grows squash, tomatoes, beans, and many vegetables, including some special plants for rabbits. That’s because he is also raising rabbits and chickens in his back yard.

He says the exercise is good for him and has helped lower his blood pressure.
