Outsiders
Lending a hand
Although Cuba has a large research capacity in various forms of
agriculture, it sought assistance in ways it could help urban agriculture
grow.
Pamela Morgan, for example, was a volunteer from Australia. She
had experience in the management of a large urban garden in Melbourne.
She offered advice on the kind of small-scale, organic cultivation
necessary to grow food in the city. She ran training programs in
Havana and worked with a neighbourhood committee to turn a vacant
lot in Old Havana into a local source of fresh vegetables and herbs.
She lived right in the community.
“The food gets used by the families who work here, but it
gets shared around quite a lot,” she said in an interview.
“Produce from gardens will go to the local primary school and the
local kindergarten. And there’s the expectation that if you’re growing
medicinal plants in particular that it’s available to whoever comes
by and needs it.”
