Justo TorresJusto Torres
A backyard bonanza

Justo Torres’s courtyard is paved with concrete.

Yet he grows everything from cassava and avocados, to tomatoes and coffee.

It’s a showcase of ingenuity - with multi-level seed beds made out of old cans, car battery casings, and rubber tires.

He attended a workshop on intensive horticulture, and since then he has been showing his neighbours how to do the same thing.

And they have worked together to build another garden in the backyard of a local primary school. Justo’s annual harvest is worth more than most Cubans make in a year.
