A business opportunity

The new market oriented approach to food has also been applied to those who provide support to urban farmers in Havana. A network of Casa de Semilla – or seed shops – can be found throughout the city. Here urban farmers can also buy tools, seedlings and natural pesticides, and seek out advice on all aspects of growing food in the city.

Most of the things for sale are provided by the Ministry of Agriculture. But the owner of the shop sets prices and can keep the profits. Evita Odalis is one of them. She gave up her job as a government scientist to run a seed shop. She already has opened a second shop, and has plans to expand even further.
