Going Green by Default

Most of the food produced in Havana is organic. Cuba used to rely heavily on imported fertilizer and pesticides from Eastern Europe. Now it can’t afford to. With the loss of imports from the former Soviet Union, Cuba had to produce much more of its own food, but with far less chemicals (which had also been imported).

In Havana chemical products have been almost completely restricted so they don’t contaminate the water supply.

Research was stepped up into natural pesticides and fertilizers, and dozens of biopesticide production plants were set up.

It’s been called the largest shift to organic farming ever attempted.
